Augustina, known as “Manang Tinang” within her family, and called “Tina” by her friends in Hawaii, lived her life in Loving and Caring for others. Her compassionate spirit in answering the call of those in great need brought her to Hawaii. Mr. Feliciano Delmendo, in his bereavement of his first wife (Doris) went to his hometown in the Phillipines seeking help for him and his son (Douglas). Augustina kindly and generously responded to his pleas by coming to Hawaii to take care of him. She subsequently married Feliciano, at his request, and became the “Matriarch” of the Delmendo family in Waipahu. Tinang and Feliciano were married for 16 years until his death in 2000.
Manang Tinang gained local celebrity through her culinary skills in preparing delicious dishes, initially Filipino food to the delight of Feliciano, and eventually learning to prepare other local dishes, particularly Japanese food. Tina worked as a cook at a Japanese Restaurant/Delicatessen in Waipahu for over 25 years. Upon her retirement, she was sought after to prepare local dishes for celebrations and gatherings of her friends, whereby her celebrity status as a wonderful cook continued until her death.
Manang Tinang was beloved by all the Delmendo’s of Hawaii. Her loving ways touched the lives of: Mr. Camilo L. Delmendo (retired Pearl Harbor, Shop 38; deceased relative of Feliciano) and Camilo’s son, Camilo (Aukai) Delmendo Jr. (formerly of Kaneohe, Oahu). Dyanne Delmendo Affonso, PhD (spouse William Affonso), son (Kevin), daughter (Javey) and grandson (Reed William), all shared in Tinang’s love of Family.
Manang Tinang lived her life in the Catholic Faith….Love, Compassion, Care, Hope imbued her Spirit. She ‘Passed through Life on Earth’ on a Holy Day –Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary - January 1, 2019, which symbolizes the Grace of her Resurrected Life, as the Blessed Virgin Mary led Tinang to Jesus Christ the Savior.
