DORIS SARAGENA AWANA, 83 of Wahiawa passed away on May 1, 2018 in Aiea. Doris grew up in Ewa on the island of Oahu, a small plantation town.
Raised by her father from birth, Gorgonio, mother, Petra Hilea (predeceased) and older siblings, Milton (predeceased) Navis Sarahina, Rose (predeceased) Kim Galase, Alice (predeceased) Jeffrey Popa, and Mary Medeiros (Benny Samante- predeceased). Her older sister, Condrada (predeceased) later moved to Hawaii from Cebu, Phillipines to join the family. While attending Waipahu High School, met her lifetime sweet heart, Jerry Lee Awana, a Marine MP at Barber’s Point Naval Station. Later, married, having 3 children, Debra, Jerleen and Nadine, enjoyed family gatherings, camping outings and an volleyball games. Doris also loved to sew and taught her daughters, an avid volleyball player, loved to dance hula and enjoyed karaoke. Before retiring, she worked for Navy Public Works for over 30 years. Doris became an avid golfer and received numerous awards which included bragging rights for “hole-in-one.” Not long after retirement, moved to Maui to reside with her daughter, Nadine. More recently, returned to Oahu to live with her daughters, Debra and Jerleen (predeceased).
Doris is survived by daughter’s Debra (Douglas) Teriipaia, Jerleen Awana (predeceased) and Nadine Awana of Maui, her sister, Mary Medeiros of Kauai, nine grandchildren, Jerry Awana, Pola Teriipaia, Tara Teriipaia, Jaslyn Adric, Michael Cuban (Kuhi Roland), Jana (Aaron) Baptista, Koikuokalani Lum, Kawika Lum (Monica Tagalan), Chanelle Awana (Chevis Kong), 19 great grandchildren, Meriahi, Jeremiah, Branden, Bronson, Bryson, Kaeo, Kailee, Kayla, Kalena, Kalei, Kala’i, Kamuela, Kahanu, Kahea, Maiola, Hikianalia, Mailelani, Meleana and Ho’aka. And related ohana’s Sarahina (Saragena), Awana, Lee, Kaaialii/Kahapea, McDermott, Sheldon, Magalianes, Galase, Popa, Samante, Salanoa, Teriipaia, Cuban and Lum.
Visitation will be 10:00 am Friday June 1, 2018 at Immaculate Conception (91-1298 Renton Rd, Ewa Beach, HI 96706) followed by memorial mass at 10:30 am. Burial will be 2:00 pm Friday June 1, 2018 at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (2177 Puowaina Drive Honolulu, HI 96813)
