Diana Sasan Obituary

Diana L. Sasan of Hawaii Kai Retirement Community passed away with her husband by her side at the age of 87 on March 26, 2020.

Diana was born in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii on October 9, 1933. She was the daughter of a Kekaha Sugar Harvesting Supervisor. She lived in Hukipo starting her day and ending her day to the sound of the sugar mill whistle. She and her sisters earned money by sewing and patching the workers’ clothes. She witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a little girl on the playground in Pomoho. She was married at a submarine base in Connecticut to a Second Lieutenant on his way to the Korean War. They would be celebrating 67 years of marriage this June. After the war they began their life in the sugar industry moving from sugar plantation to sugar plantation, HSPA, Kekaha Sugar, Wailuku Sugar, Paauhau Sugar, Kau Sugar and Mauna Kea Agribusiness. Diana had many hobbies and interests besides entertaining. Those included: world travel with her sisters, gardening, flower arrangement where she earned the highest Ikebana certification, TESOL Teacher, PTA, raising her three boys, cooking for celebrations and holidays, baking, Hawaiian Arts and Crafts, and Church and Civic duties. She could always be recognized at little league games, judo competitions, softball tournaments, and football games by her loud cheering and intermittent screaming at the officials’ calls. She could be heard singing while doing gardening or keeping a tidy house. The family is comforted knowing that she will be greeted by her parents, siblings and friends from her journey throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her father Amadio Lampitoc and Tomasa Soriano.

She is survived by her husband Jay A. Sasan, sons Timothy Jay (Beth) of Fairfax, CA, Charles Francis of the Big Island and John Willian (Marion) of Oahu, 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, sisters Lolita (Edward) Toves and Rosalino (Alejo) Agni, brother Melvin Soriano, all of Oahu and Arsenia Schroeder of Pennsylvania.

Due to the Covid-19 a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
