Fred Cacayorin Obituary

Fred Orcino Cacayorin of Wahiawa, Hawai’i, passed away on December 30, 2020 surrounded by the love and presence of his family.  He was 83 years old.

A native son of Paoay, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines, Fred was born on October 7, 1937.  He was the very youngest of nine children to Tiburcio and Ildefonza Cacayorin.  He loved growing up in Ilocos Norte and often spoke about his fond memories on the family farm, Paoay Lake, Paoay Church, and his carabao.  Fred loved animals, so it comes to no surprise that he studied animal husbandry at Araneta University in Manila.

His great spirit of adventure led him to migrate to the United States in search of better opportunities in 1968.  He first took up residence in the heart of Kalihi.  He married his long-time sweetheart, Elie, in 1971 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.  They began their wonderful new life together as a married couple in Wahiawa.

Fred worked in the construction industry for over 35 years. He started his career as a laborer and successfully earned high level positions through his tenure.  His hard work can be evidenced by the various high-rise buildings that illuminate the picturesque Honolulu waterfront and many famous landmarks on O’ahu. His diligence, strong work ethic, physical strength, and attention to detail awarded him many safety awards through the years.  He retired in 2004 as a master crane and radio operator.

When Fred announced his retirement to his family, he had a pocket full of adventures in mind and certainly did not slow down for one bit!  Shortly after his retirement, he began a landscaping business. He was an active member of the Laborer’s Union Local 368.  For fun, Fred enjoyed traveling globally with his lovely wife, spending time with his children and precious grandchildren who adore him, the casinos of Las Vegas, joyriding in his truck with his dog in tow, and watching his beloved Los Angeles Lakers.  Fred was highly skilled at transforming remnants into unique, practical contraptions and was always so willing to help those around him.  He had a true servant’s heart.

Fred was an assertive yet soft-spoken gentleman, and he certainly was no ordinary man.

Fred is survived by his loving wife Elie of 49 years; his son Melvin, his wife Grace; his daughter Jayne, her husband Richard; and countless family members.  He is also survived by four grandchildren who will, indeed, carry on Fred’s legacy: Mason, Melody, Charity, and Timothy.  He also leaves behind his fearless and ferociously friendly dog Li’i.
