PETER MANULANI DE LA CRUZ, 68, of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away on August 31, 2020. He was born in Honolulu, Hawai’i. He is survived by his sisters, Maylene Acosta, Irene Nagata (Ted), Malie Hirao, Josie De La Cruz (Alberta Pukahi; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother, Agnes De La Cruz; and his brothers, John De La Cruz and Thomas De La Cruz.
Peter’s family and friends remember him fondly as a free spirit who enjoyed his independence and carefree lifestyle—ua noho i keola me ka hopohopo’ole. While mostly a private person, he responded to certain situations in amazing ways—one in which he received a Honolulu Police Department HPD Citizenship Award for aiding the police in the line of duty. He didn’t mention it again, but we knew he was pleased that he had contributed in some way to preventing further injury to those around him. Following that incident, he seemed to walk a little bit taller and smile a bit more broadly. That was our brother Peter and how we will always remember him. He is now in a better place and in great company—our dear mother, twin brother John, gentle younger brother Thomas, and precious aunts and uncles who will all welcome him with open arms.
Mahalo piha to family and friends for their support over the years. We appreciate the times when you were there for him and provided good counsel when he needed it most.
