Took up alto sax at Farrington HS late 1930’s at his father’s request. Hung around outside Hotel Street jazz clubs as early teen, listening to jazz musicians, (many army soldiers stationed in Hawaii). Later played in Army jazz band, stationed at hospital (St Louis HS). After Army, Gigged at various Honolulu jazz clubs, lived at Damon Track, then moved to mainland, played from coast to coast as well as Hollywood films (sometimes with Gabe Balthazar). Returned home around 1980 working and living his bebop dreams n clubs and backyard jam sessions. Died of natural old age causes at 100 yrs old on 2022 Super Bowl Sunday. Rest his bebop soul.
Our Dad "Al Bang" was thee man behind the Saxophone. He will be remembered by players that played beside him. We will always remember the way he lived & enjoyed his children, grandchildren, etc & friends. He is now at peace with the rest of our departed families. "A Hui Ho" Dad..
Al Bang on alto sax, is what you would hear for 50 years, at jazz gigs from 1940s thru 2000 up and down the West and East Coast, Midwest, and his home in Hawaii.
