OBITUARY
Alma (Lynch) Brinston-Smith, age 77, of Waipahu, HI passed on June 5, 2021. Alma was born to the late Rev. Oliver and Mary (White) Lynch on July 17, 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee and was the youngest of her siblings. Her stepmother, Pearlie (Glover) Lynch, helped to raise her after her Mother passed in l945.
She confessed her faith in Christ at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. Gary, IN where Rev. Charles Protho was Pastor. She joined the Choir at Pilgrim Rest and was also a member of her family youth gospel group, The Lynch Singers. The family group appeared in churches, radio shows, and won a recording contract as a winner from the Vivian Carter Talent Show in Gary, IN.
Alma was a 1961 graduate of Froebel High School, Gary, IN and became employed for Indiana University NW as a Secretary. She later met Samuel Hubbard and they had her only son, Devin, who was born on October 5, 1965. She continued her career working as a Law Secretary for various Attorneys in Gary, and also worked as a Secretary in the Administration of Mayor Richard Gordon Hatcher, Gary, IN. She later moved to Chicago where she continued to excel in her field of assisting Attorneys. Her marriage to Simon Brinston was short and after Devin graduated from high school, she decided to move to Honolulu, Hawaii where her oldest sister, Barbara, had moved a few years back. She met her husband, Herman R. Smith, and enjoyed 27 years with him before he succumbed to his illnesses in 2013. Alma resided in Hawaii for about 40 years and enjoyed every minute with her family and cat, Chase.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman R. Smith, her parents, sisters, Barbara Protho and Ruthie Bentley, brother, Oliver Lynch, and nephew, Darrell Bentley. She leaves to cherish her memories, her only child, Devin (Linda) Brinston, Waipahu, HI, sister, Virgie (Lynch) Thornton, Merrillville, IN, Niece, Fawn (Thornton) McDaniel, Merrillville, IN, Nephews: Edward Thornton, Allen, TX, Mark Thornton, Gary, IN, Arthell Protho, Aniston, Al, Grands: Michael E. Williams, Maryland, Taylor D. Wisham, Chicago, IL., Raymond (Shenna) Martin, Robert and Ruston Martin, three great granddaughters, grand goddaughter, Tyli, and a host of other relatives and friends. Alma, you will be extremely missed.
Visitation will be at 5:30pm at The Mililani Mortuary Makai Chapel on Thursday, July 15, 2021 with Wake services at 6:00pm.
