Asuncion Balanay Gamiao's Obituary
Asuncion Balanay Gamiao, Ason as she was known by all was born on July 5th, 1934 in Barrio
5, Vintar, Ilocos Norte, Philippines and passed away at home in Pupukea on September 28th,
2025 at the age of 91 surrounded by her family. She was the 3rd of Bibiano and Juliana’s five
children. She was married to the late Amadeo Benigno Gamiao in 1955 until his death in
2012.
She worked as a Pineapple Packer for the Del Monte Corporation in Kunia for over 30 years.
In the time following her retirement, she enjoyed gardening and tending to her vegetables and
flowers, babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She especially enjoyed just
staying home and talking story with her husband and neighbors.
In 1960, she and her then four year old son Edgar immigrated to Hawaii to be reunited with
her husband. Upon arriving, they shared a 4 bedroom house with three other families in
Opaeula Camp in Haleiwa and later moved to Mill Camp in Waialua. Life in Hawaii was hard
and it was not until 1968 that they finally were able to purchase their own home in Waialua.
In 2005 she and Amadeo celebrated their 50th anniversary and renewed their vows in Las
Vegas surrounded by family and relatives.
She was thankful for all the friends and relatives that called or visited her after her husband
had passed. She had lived a long and happy life and longed to be reunited with him once
again.
She stressed education to all her children because she had finished only the 9th grade. She was
very proud that all her siblings were college graduates and worked hard to sponsor their
immigration to Hawaii in order to share a better life.
She is survived by her son, Edgar (Catherine) Gamiao, her late daughter Eileen (Alton) Pao,
and daughter Elaine (Robinson Jr.) Cubi, grandsons, Robbie Boy, Bret, Jarrett, Jensen and
Keenan, granddaughters Jaymi, Jena, Kanani, and Mariah, and 16 great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother Andres Balanay and is preceded in death by brother
Aniceto Balanay, and sisters Priscilla Pelayo and Anastasia Agustin.
