On March 7, 1936, Barbara Jean was born to Aldoph William Steinhoff and Minnie Ki?iuli (Mali?ikapu) Keawe.
She was the eldest child of six siblings - Herman Steinhoff (deceased), Harold Steinhoff, Robert Steinhoff, Blossom Bishop (deceased), and Rachel Rapez.
Barbara was born in Honolulu and grew up in Na¯na¯kuli. At the age of 16 years old, Barbara dropped out of school to take care of her younger siblings. From then on, she had taken care of many others - three generations of the Steinhoff family.
Barbara married Martin Brendon Sampaga (deceased) and had five children - Carl Wayne Sampaga (deceased), Journet Lamarr Napeahi, Raynette Doreen Bantolina, Carlton Reece Sampaga (deceased), and April Mahealani Rapez. With her family, Barbara lived in A¯liamanu, formally called, A¯liamanu Homes. She and her family later moved to Kalihi Kai on Democrat Street.
At the same time of raising her family, Barbara worked as a waitress at the Wailana Coffee House in Waiki¯ki¯ in her early years. She then worked as a sales associate, buyer, then manager at both Ritz Department Stores on Fort Street and in Ala Moana Center.
Barbara had eighteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
The last three days of her life was spent with laughter and tears, surrounded by her surviving daughters and two grandchildren. During her peaceful sleep, Barbara took her last breath on this earth around 3:30 am on January 11, 2023 in Ho¯?ae?ae, O?ahu.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 7, 2023 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation begins at 10:30 am, and service at 11:30 am. Burial to follow 12:30 pm at Mililani Memorial Park.
The ashes of Martin Brendan Sampaga, the former husband of Barbara, will be laid to rest with her.
