I played basketball with Bernie in those early years at UH. I will remember her as a staunch competitor and well-respected teammate on the court. She worked hard and wasn't afraid to motivate her teammates to do the same. She also had a soft side that wasn't always obvious but you knew she cared. This would become more evident when seeing her with her family. God bless you and your family, Bernie. May you rest in peace. Aloha nÅ.
Aloha Taaca 'ohana,Bernie was a class act and worked hard for the Keiki of the westside. I will always have great memories first playing softball against Bernie when she was with the Kalihi Jets. Then I was lucky enough to get to know her as a PE teacher. The times we spent doing inter school athletics and going to Chaminade for our PD will be treasured memories. One of the best was when we were collaborating on a exam we had and the guest speaker behind us was suppose to be blind so we thought no problem come to find out he could see. Luckly he didn't turn us in. 8 fat fat 8 was also a good time. Bernie rest in aloha friend.
Awww Bernie. My deepest sympathy to Leo, your children, and grandchildren.A terrific athlete from an early age. I have known Bernie since her brothers, Harry and Anthony played Little League Baseball. While at Waianae High School, Bernie and I threw the Shot Put and Discus. Nearly every track meet, Bernie and I would go to Makaha Drive Inn and buy a plate lunch. After all, we didn't have to run. At least until the Weight Women's Relay came about. I will always remember you!Aloha,Rhonda Kaimiola
