Bernard Magno Cambia, 92, of Waipahu, Hawaii passed away on July 30, 2022 at his home with his family.
Bernard was born on October 17, 1929 to Pablo and Juliana Cambia in Waimea, Kauai. He attended and graduated from Farrington High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Bernard served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars and served 22 years before retiring as a decorated Staff Sargent.
Bernard was a proud and active member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign War Post 10276, and the Blinded Veterans Association. He participated in many veterans’ activities, including three National Golden Age Games, with the last being in 2019 in Anchorage, Alaska, where he won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal. Bernard was featured in the National Golden Age Games’ “The Daily Hook” article and a spotlight video. He always enjoyed spending time with his fellow veterans, spreading his aloha, and “talking story.”
Bernard was also a Civil Service employee where he retired as a warehouse manager at Schofield Barracks.
He earned his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. He enjoyed playing the guitar and ukulele, singing, and telling jokes.
Bernard cherished time with his family, loved to travel, especially to Vegas, and enjoyed being entertained by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Anyone who knew Bernard knew that he was a kind and loving person. He enjoyed giving back to his community by helping others.
Bernard was predeceased in death by his son Darryl (Jeannie). He is survived by his wife and sweetheart of almost 72 years, Magdalena – Magie – Betty, their four daughters, Cheryl Peterson (Sammy), Vanessa Walter, Aprile Hirata and Julie McManus (Brian), a brother, Alfredo Tabilas (Norma), 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers and monetary gifts, donations can be sent directly to: Blind Veterans Association or Autism Society of Hawaii.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Monday, October 10, 2022
Mililani Memorial Park, Waipio - Makai Chapel
Visitation 10:00 AM and Program Service Commences at 11:00 AM
