Carlos Gamba Bernardo's Obituary
Carlos Gamba Bernardo of Waipahu passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026
surrounded by family. He was 83 years old.
Born in Navotas, Metro Manila, Philippines, Carlos was the oldest of five children. He
graduated from National Teachers College in 1960 and earned a Bachelor of Science in
Electrical Engineering at Feati University.
He joined the U.S. Navy and honorably served his country with unyielding bravery and
resilience. With an innate grit, Carlos advanced in his military career. A Vietnam War
and Operation Desert Storm veteran, Carlos retired as a lieutenant commander after
nearly 30 years of service.
His love for his family was immeasurable. A devoted husband, father and grandfather,
Carlos relished in family gatherings where he served his sought-after kare-kare, a
savory Filipino dish.
He was a pillar of unwavering strength and support to friends and loved ones.
Guided by faith and service, Carlos was a Eucharistic minister at the Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church and Master Mason of the Schofield Lodge, F.& A.M. and Leeward Lodge, F.& A.M.
He also retired form the City and County of Honolulu after serving at the Honouliuli
Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Department of Environmental Services.
Carlos will be best remembered for his integrity, quick wit and warm smile. Loved ones will also remember him for putting family above all.
Carlos is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Flora Cabusas Bernardo; daughters’ Rowena Walker (Ronald) and Rosemarie Bernardo-Grimes (Michael); son Ronaldo Bernardo (Rhodora); granddaughter Amelia Walker: and grandsons’ Aaron Joshia Bernardo, Ethan Jacob Bernardo, Aaron Grimes and Luke Walker.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026 at the Mililani Memorial Park & Mortuary - Mauka Chapel in Waipahu.
Viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. Service will start at 11 a.m.
Carlos will be laid to rest with military honors at the Hawai’i State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe at 2 p.m.
