Chris Phillip Lincoln Naone's Obituary
Chris Naone Obituary
Chris Phillip Lincoln Naone, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 4, 2022. Born in Ewa and raised in the heart of Nanakuli Valley, Phillip graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1950. He joined the Navy Reserves and served for six years traveling to places like Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. He worked at Lualualei Naval Ammunition Depot for the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station until retiring in January, 1989. His fellow workers remember him as a brilliant machinist “Model Maker” by title who helped the U.S. Navy invent a torpedo target used for undersea torpedo practices.
Phillip had two favorite past-time hobbies - building stock car engines and watching them race at Campbell Industrial Raceway Park, and what he is most well-known for, building, reconfiguring, and repairing Hawaiian koa canoes. While there are too many to list, canoes special to him that he helped build include Hawai’i’s famous Hokule’a, Wai’anae’s keiki the “Eala”, the “Honomalino” owned by Kaipoha Canoe Club, Makaha Canoe Club’s “Hanakeoki”, and his and Wally Froiseth’s own “Malama”. He, along with his wife Miriam and other community members founded Makaha Canoe Club in 1971. Dad was a family man, strict and stern who kept busy working, making sure food was on the table and the bills were paid. He loved his wife Miriam very much, and his blended family, sons Phillip G. Naone, Joseph K. Whitford (Daryl), Mark Whitford (Donna), daughters Hilda Kawaakoa (Gary), Marlene Ryannette Kahoonei, Shawna Keliinoi, Miriam Whitford-Campos (Michael), and all his grand and great grandchildren.
He turned 90 years old on Christmas morning and entered into God's light the first Tuesday of the New Year. We will miss his presence and wisdom, his wit and straight forward humor, and his strength and love for us all. We give God all the praises and glory, and are forever thankful to God for his life and earthly legacy.
Services to be held on Friday, April 22, 2022 at Mililani Memorial Park & Mortuary - Mauka Chapel. Family Visitation begins at 8:30 AM, Public Visitation at 9:00 AM, and Celebration of Life/Memorial Service at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow, 1:00 PM at Hawaiian Memorial Park, Kaneohe.
