Derrick Kalani Pua Avilla Mahaulu's Obituary
Derrick Kalani Pua Avilla Mahaulu, 60, of Waianae, Hawaii passed away on November 09, 2025 at Queens West in Ewa Beach. He was born on March 05, 1965 in Honolulu Hawaii to Thomas and Eliza Mahaulu (deceased). Derrick lived in Makaha where he raised and cared for his animals with Compassion, then later moved to Waianae where he attended Waianae Intermediate and High School. He was always involved in sports; baseball, basketball, football, track and field, canoe paddling and bowling. He graduated from Waianae High School in 1983 with several awards for football; Honolulu Advertiser Award for Hawaii State High School Defensive Player of the Year 1982, All-OIA West Football First Team 1982, OIA Hall of Honor 1981-82 and many track and field ribbons and medals which includes the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) State Champion in the boys High Jump representing Waianae High School in 1983; his winning jump was 6 feet 6 inches. Derrick attended Taft College near Bakersfield in California for football from 1983-84 and played in the Shrine Potato Bowl. Derrick was on a bowling league and he also paddled canoe for Ka Mo’i Canoe Club in Waianae and has crossed the Moloka’i Channel several times. Derrick has worked numerous jobs including; Hawaiian Ice Company (3 years) and Sun Industries/Grace Pacific (21 years). Derrick was an Amazing, Loving, Caring, Kind, Hard Working, Gentle Giant, Pillar of Strength, Humble Hawaiian who LOVED his Family with ALL his Spirit, Soul and Strength. Nothing was to hard or impossible for him, if you ask him his answer would Always be “AUTOMATIC”. We will Forever Cherish the Many memories we have of Him, Our Hawaiian Supah Man. His Legacy will Live on. He is survived by his Loving “Wife for Life” of 42 years Darnell Mahaulu, daughter Amy Maldonado (Edward III), sons Derrick Mahaulu Jr. (Keala), Eric Dodge and Malachi Mahaulu, 7 grandchildren, Kanoa, Deja, Edward IV and Ocean Maldonado and Kiarra-Lynn, Derrick III and Lucky Boy (deceased) Mahaulu; brothers Thomas Mahaulu Jr. and Watson Mahaulu (deceased), sisters Momi Mahaulu and Lisa Lavata’i and Many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunties, extended family members and friends. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation begins at 8:00 am and service at 9:00 am.
