On Tuesday, June 28, 2022, Edna Mae (Kahookele) Smith, loving mother and grandmother passed away while napping at the age of 97 at Hale Ho Aloha. Edna Mae was born May 28, 1925 at the family home in Waikiki to John Kaihe and Margaret Healani (Jarrett) Kahookele. They then moved to Wailuku, Maui and then to Okala, Hawaii. Where she graduated from Laupahoehoe High School, she was the May Day Queen that year.
Edna married James Toedtemeier while he was stationed in Hawaii, they had two daughters, they later divorced and she returned to Honolulu, HI. She then married Adrian Silva, he preceded her in passing. She then was united in marriage to Charles Smith who preceded her in 1999.
Edna's desire to learn new things led her to learn the Hawaiian Language, to play the piano, ukulele, tap dancing and typing. She was very active in researching and documenting her family genealogy. She retired from Waimano Home in 1987, previously working at Hawaiian Village. Upon retirement she worked in the adoptive grandparent program in the Honolulu school system.
She is survived by her daughters, Brenda & Evelyn and son-in-law Mike; 2 Grandsons, Todd (Katy) & Kendel (Jennifer), 2 Granddaughters, Lori & Jenna (Matt); 10 great-grandsons, 2 great-great-grandsons; Numerous nieces & nephews. Preceding her in death was her parents, John Kaihe Kahookele, Margaret Healani (Jarrett) Holt; her 8 brothers, her 11 sisters; and 2 granddaughters Ursula and Megan.
Burial will take place 10:30 am on Friday, September 2, 2022 at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
