Edward Kamakaala Chong's Obituary
Edward Chong Obituary
Edward K. Chong, 86, of Mililani died at home on October 15, 2023. Born and raised in Hilo, he was the eldest of six siblings. Ed grew up realizing that complaining about his circumstances wouldn't improve his situation. This realization instilled in him the value of hard work and the drive to accomplish his goals and care and provide for his family.
He met his wife of over 50 years, Alberta, at UH Manoa. Together they built a wonderful life together and raised four children, Lorna Chong (Rolf), Lianne Harris, Nalani Chong, and Keone Chong in a close-knit neighborhood that is considered an extended part of his family.
His professional career started and ended at Castle & Cooke, where he worked his way up to land manager, assisting with the real estate development and managing of the company land. He was part of the tenacious Classic Cooke crew, which brought laughter along with good fun harassment to his life.
If he wasn't at home or work, he was at the golf course. Playing golf gave him the freedom to do what he loved while working. It was also a sport he was able to do with his kids and grandkids well into his later years.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed cooking, traveling and spending time with his grandkids when they were in Hawaii.
Besides his wife, children, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild, Ed is survived by brother, Samuel Jr., sisters Angie Tanaka (Alvin), Rose Shimabukuro (Richard), and an extended 'ohana. He was preceded in death by parents Eva and Koyei Higa, Samuel Wah Chong, brother, Ronald and sister, Irene Herring.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation 10:00 am; Service 11:00 am; Burial 12:30 pm at Mililani Memorial Park.
