Eugenia Malanog Ompad May 14, 1923 - October 12, 2019Yesterday my Grandmother of 96 years was surrounded by Her Beloved Family as she exhaled her last breath before going to Heaven at around 7:00pm last night. She passed away Peacefully at my Aunty Arleen's home in Makaha on the island of Oahu, in Hawaii. When my sister Roxanne quickly made her travel plans a few days ago, to be at my Grandma's side, I hesitated. There was only one seat left on that last minute flight. Instead, I made plans to travel to Hawaii this coming Tuesday, October 15th.Roxanne made it in time to say her goodbyes...with mere hours to spare. She & my Mom arrived in Makaha shortly after 2:00pm...Grandma was gone at 7:00pm. Roxanne made sure to tell her that I was coming, but her body just couldn't remain on this earthly plane any longer.Part of me hesitated, because I did not want to see my Grandma in a compromised & much altered physical state. I wanted to always remember her laughing, smiling, & content. I was fortunate to spend this last Mother's Day with her even! The first photograph in this set captures the last time I was in her presence. I am at Peace knowing she has to suffer no more.96 years is a long time to live a vibrant, fruitful, & happy life. So many years to influence & help others, so much experience & advice to impart, so many places to travel, endless memories collected & shared!!!In her younger years in Hawaii she took in laundry from sugar plantation workers on Maui as humble work. It was all done by hand, no machines, caustic lye scrubbing and full starch ironing!!! On the weekends she would play softball and was the team pitcher! Later in the war era, she worked on airplanes doing mechanical work like changing spark plugs. When my Grandfather was dispatched abroad while serving as a Master Sergeant in the Army, my Grandmother raised their children in Europe..globetrotting across Italy, Germany, & even living in France (In and around the cities of Saint-Jean-d'Angély, Fontenet, & La Rochelle) for some time! They even lived in the Pacific North West in Tacoma, Washington! After returning to Hawaii she worked as a dedicated cashier for the military commissary at Barbers Point Naval Air Station. She worked there for over 30 years & often times received awards for perfect attendance - showing up for work for every single day of the year!!! In her free time she loved traveling to Las Vegas for vacation! Her favorite games were early morning Keno &, of course, SLOTS!!! As her oldest grandchild, I made it a priority to accompany her as her travel companion. In my early 20's I remember her & my Aunty Rochelle making Summer trips out to California almost EVERY YEAR!!!We would drive up and down California...Broadway shows in Los Angeles, visiting my Aunty Patti in California City when SHE was an airplane mechanic at Edwards Air Force Base, seeking the best produce stands in Modesto where my Aunty Nobina resided - you could buy 12 ears of corn for $1.00 back then!!!Detours took us through Nevada to look at land plots she invested in, gambling in Las Vegas & Reno...getting stuck in the freezing snow of The Sierras for hours coming over Donner Pass...I even took her for her first crazy fast snowmobile ride near Lake Tahoe!!!Tranquil Family vacations in majestic Yosemite National Park...Tropical island hopping to Maui...Desert trips to Arizona...Chilly & Picturesque Victoria in British Columbia...All over Wine Country in Sonoma County...Touring FABULOUS New York City...THE LIST GOES ON, & ON, & ON!!!I still cannot believe I won't have the opportunity to share her company again...That fact makes me sad...but I will ALWAYS CHERISH THOSE FOND MEMORIES!!!Grandma, as the Matriarch, you taught me so many lessons that I will carry with me deep within my Heart...- If you want something bad enough, go get it!!!- Style is a curious conundrum, but ALWAYS make it your own...a little bit of sequins never hurt anybody!- Always go for the BEST QUALITY you can afford!!! In the end you will be happy you spent a little extra money.- Rising early to greet the
