Evelyn Ku'ulei "Aunty Lei" Ka'awa Collins' Obituary
Evelyn Ku‘ulei “Aunty Lei” Ka‘awa Collins was called home to glory on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the age of 71. She passed peacefully at home in the comfort of her family’s love and prayers.
Born on February 8, 1954, in Nanakuli to the Reverends Andrew and Emmaline Ka‘awa, she was the 12th of 15 children. Growing up in a large, faith-filled family instilled in her a deep sense of devotion, community, and compassion—values she carried throughout her entire life.
A proud graduate of Waianae High School, Aunty Lei went on to dedicate much of her career to the very school that shaped her. As an Educational Assistant, she worked tirelessly to support students in their academic journeys and personal growth. Her strength, patience, and encouragement left a lasting impression on countless young lives.
Beyond the classroom, Aunty Lei served her community in many ways. She shared her love of Hawaiian culture as a respected Kumu Hula, passing down traditions of dance and story with grace and passion. She also made her mark as both a bowler and coach, building not only skill but also camaraderie and teamwork among those she guided. She was 40 year veteran of the Hawaii Mixed Fivesome bowling league and served as the Secretary Treasurer for over 30 years.
At the center of everything was family. For Aunty Lei, nothing was more important than her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She stood fiercely for her loved ones, offering her unwavering support and defense whenever it was needed. She was a constant presence at family events, a source of wisdom in times of struggle, and the loudest cheerleader in moments of joy.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary Collins, Sr.—the love of her life and lifelong partner. Together they built a family rooted in love, strength, and faith.
She is survived by her four children: Dennis (Marcie), Kapela (Kaulana), Linda (Josiah), and Gary Boy; 14 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren, each of whom will carry forward her love, lessons, and legacy.
Aunty Lei’s life was a beautiful example of service, resilience, and aloha. She touched the hearts of many and leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will forever live on in the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Mililani Mauka Chapel, with visitation at 5:30 pm. Burial will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 9:00 am, at Nanakuli Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, and support received during this time.
