Florentino "Johnny" Acosta's Obituary
Florentino “Johnny” Acosta, 99, of Wahiawa, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026 at Hale Nani Nursing Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born on March 23, 1927 in Ewa Beach and raised on the Ewa sugar plantation.
A proud Army soldier, Florentino served his country in three wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, before retiring from the United States Army. His service was honored with the Bronze Star Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He later continued his federal service as a civilian, eventually retiring from his work at Pearl
Harbor Naval Shipyard.
At home in Waialua, Hawaii, for decades Johnny treasured the simple joys of island life. Living just steps from the ocean, he loved casting his fishing rod at the beach on Crozier Loop and crabbing at the Long Bridge connecting Waialua and Haleiwa. He often met friends for coffee at the Haleiwa McDonald’s to “talk stories” and he took great pride in his home, meticulously caring for his yard and garden. He spent his holidays surrounded by family and friends, and his door stayed open to most
anyone who wished to come enjoy his beachfront home any day of the week.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Lucy Santiago Acosta; his sons, Jonathan Acosta, Anthony (Sylvia) Acosta, and Nicky (Tina Azevedo) Domingo; his daughters, Jennifer (Alvan) Hirata, Carol (Robert) Ventura, Christine (Jonathan) Sabey, Debbie Acosta Quesada, Marcia (Tommy) Domingo Sumile, and Abigail “Abby” Domingo Bassim; his brothers, Larry Acosta and Danny Namoc; his sisters, Lillian Sojot and Jenny (Douglas) Moniz; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-greatgrandchildren.
