Both Frederick (Fred, as he was known by many) & sister Faye were raised by their Mother’s hanai parents Flora & Kiliwelio (Sylvester)Kainoa at Kaauhuhu Homestead in North Kohala. Their mother Flora as well as Fred & Faye’s first language was Hawaiian because both grandparents only spoke Hawaiian. Fred continued to live in Kohala with Tutu kane Kiliwelio Kainoa (Grandmother Flora died in 1952) and attended Kohala Elem. School. In 1958 they moved to Kona to be with his Mother & siblings. He was a graduate of Konawaena High School. While in high school he joined the National Guard in Kona. After graduation in 1964 he moved to Oahu where he continued with the National Guard and worked at a golf course in the Wahiawa area. While living in Wahiawa he met his wife Norah Hawelu. They had their first child, Frederick Wayne III. He then joined the Army and off they went to see the world! First to the mainland, then on to Okinawa, where daughter Cherina P. was born, then off to Germany for approximately 8 years! In 1979 he was stationed @ Fort Shafter on Oahu. Here their 2nd son Donald M. was born. Approximately 4 years later he went to Pensacola, Florida where 3rd son Thomas was born. In 1985 they came back to Hawaii, he was stationed in Schofield until his retirement in 1989. After retiring from the Army he started being a “junker” as he called it. He enjoyed collecting other people’s junk and as they say, “other people’s junk, someone else’s treasures”! He was also an avid collector of US stamps, US coins, comic books & baseball cards. After his retirement from the Army, he worked at a recycling Company in Kapolei where he retired after more than 10 years. He then started doing more of what he enjoyed! Gardening, going to the beach, scrap iron collecting (Just like his Grandpa Joe) and helping the homeless. He was a member of Christ Embassy in Waipahu. He loved his church & loved his family unconditionally! God Bless you, “may the Lord make his face to shine upon you forever”…
