Gil and I served together in Edzell Scotland. He was a postal clerk and I was a communications technician. Gil and I took a memorable TAD trip to the USS HOLDER DD819 which was part of a NATO Squadron. We met the ship in the Moray Firth. The purpose of the trip was to deliver some registered mail to the ship which Gil handled. I was his driver and our car was a 1965 Ford station wagon which stalled every time we had to stop. Gil would jump out, raise the hood and do something to get us restarted. After delivering the mail we stayed in a hotel in Dingwall, I think. After the hotel bar closed we cruised the streets of Dingwall in our big gray station wagon. Great fun and never to be forgotten.
Gil was the first CMC I worked with as a Chief and he was absolutely a great role model. I remember the morning he came into the hanger when Tick Nelson and I were on the SCPO list. He gave me a number and said call it you need to verify the information, my troops and I were in the midst of final preps for the Admiral to begin inspecting troops and the hanger. Gil's sense of humor was contagious and liberty was interesting.Â
