Harry Kwon passed away peacefully at home in Wahiawa, Hawaii, on April 5, 2026, at the age of 85. Harry was born in Lahaina, Maui, and graduated from Lahainaluna High School. He joined the U.S. Army at age 19 and did two tours in Vietnam. He ended his military career 26 years later at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa as a Command Sargeant Major, the highest non-commissioned rank achieved by only about 1 percent of all enlisted personnel. After retiring from the military, he worked in the public schools in Wahiawa as a JROTC teacher at Leilehua High School and as the safety officer at Solomon Elementary. After 59 years of diligent work, he retired at the age of 78. Harry received many awards for his distinguished military service, including the Bronze Star for his combat service in Vietnam. He was equally committed to community service as a volunteer with the Lion’s Club and the Junior Police Officer program at Solomon. He was known for his aloha, calm presence, humility, work ethic, and love of family.
Harry is survived by his beloved wife Laura and siblings Paul and Grace. He was a selfless father to daughters Michelle Brown (Doug), Melissa Takeyama (David), and Michelle Kwon, and son Albert Mendoza. He was a devoted Papa to his grandchildren Dylan Mendoza, Clayton Brown (Emily and great grandchild Julia), Ethan and Noa Takeyama, Taylor Sloggett (Chad), Daniela Brown, Jordan Keenan (CJ), and Madison Kwon (great grandchildren Zamirah and Nasir). He was also a loving uncle to many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Merna, Jeanette, and Joseph, and his son Marke.
Public service at Mililani Mortuary Downtown, 20 S. Kukui St., Honolulu, on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Visitation with family will begin at 4:30 p.m. The celebration of life will begin at 5:30 p.m. Aloha attire. Private inurnment at the National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on O’ahu.
