Helen Marie Brittain's Obituary
Helen Brittain Obituary
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Our dear mother Helen Medieros Brittain, 94, of Wahiawa, Hawaii, passed away on August 5, 2023. Mom was born on August 12, 1928 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
During her 94 years span of her life, went through 16 Presidents beginning with Calvin Coolidge [30] and ended with Joe Biden [46]. The hit songs of her time were O Sonny Boy and Mac the Knife. She grew up in a small-two-bedroom home on Ilaniwai street in Kakaako with her Mother Flora and her Father Marion and her 10 surviving siblings. Although she was the ninth child in a baker’s dozen [13]. And she was also the only child born in the hospital in which her siblings would constantly tease her about.
Proverbs 31:10-12 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
I can remember mom telling the story of how she met dad. The story goes that at the age of nineteen, she walked pass a handsome young man who whistled at her as she passed by on her way to see a movie and her cousin Priscilla [who was an usherette at the local movie theater] who was setting her up with a blind date and introduced mom to the same handsome young man who whistled at her as she passed by. Three days later our dad Nani [William Brittain Jr.] asked mom to marry him and three months they were married on August 16,1947. Their marriage lasted for 48 years until dad passed away in 1995. She loved dad so much that she celebrated each anniversary until she passed.
Mom was a strong, opinionated, witty, and a confident woman who spoke her mind. Mom was a woman who had many talents and was always willing to stand in the gap if there was a need, from crocheting ponchos as Christmas presents for the church to watching her grandchildren. Mom was the rock of our family.
Mom was a wonderful mother and a grandmother, as well as a woman of faith. She would happily sing about going to heaven and walking with the King, sharing her testimony.
We rejoice and are happy to know that she is in the presence of Christ for her faith now, has turned to sight, and Mom can see her Savior face to face, and she is now reunited with those who have gone before her husband Nani as well as her mother and father and all of her siblings.
Mom can truly say: 2 Timothy 4:7-8
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Mother-- To one who bears the sweetest name and adds luster to the same. Long life to her, for there's no other, who takes the place of my Dear Mother.
She is survived by son, William Brittain (Alethea "Cricket"); daughter, Lisa Peterson (Steven); 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel.
Visitation begins at 9:00 am; and service 10:00 am. Committal Service 1:00 pm at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, Kaneohe.
