Herbert Andrew Young, age 91, passed away on April 4, 2024, at Straub Medical Center. He was born in Honolulu and graduated from McKinley High School in 1950. He joined the Hawaii Air National Guard where he served eight years. He retired with 49 years of service with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Principal Aviation Safety Inspector.
As an FAA Safety Inspector, Herbert was responsible for ensuring that U.S. aircraft and airlines followed FAA policies and regulations. He was also responsible for investigating aircraft accidents and violations. His career allowed him to travel the world where he ensured that U.S. aircraft received U.S. regulated service, parts and equipment. He traveled to many countries where the government provided him with a Geneva Convention identification card. He was awarded the Charles Taylor “Master Mechanic” Award that recognizes fifty years of lifetime accomplishments of senior mechanics.
Herbert is survived by his longtime companion Jane Yoshikado, son Vernon Young (Dawn), daughter Lauren Koochi, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife Mildred Young and son Andrew H. Young. His Celebration of Life will be on Friday, July 12, 2024, at Mililani Memorial Park, Mauka Chapel. Visitation at 9:30 a.m. and service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Aloha attire.
