Herman Smith Obituary
Herman Henry Smith, better known as “Papadoo” or “Smitty”, 91 of Waipahu, Hawaii passed away on October 4, 2023. He was born in Bremen, IN on April 5, 1932. Herman was a Veteran of the US Air Force and a member of the Lather’s Union. He retired as a Lead Supply Clerk at Pan American Airlines in 1986. Starting a second career as a Master Carpenter for the US Army retiring from the DOD in 1997.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents Henry Herman and Flora Mae (Lock) Smith and his wife Janet Ortiz Smith. He was the eldest brother of Joan, George, Carl, Robert, and Clara Mae.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Mark (Mariese), Anthony (Vilay), and Maria Elena “Mayeni”. Three grandchildren, Valerie Ogata (Corey), Vichelle and Justin. Hanai sister Maryln (Stuntz) Hochstetler of Walkerton, IN.
Herman stayed active with his many hobbies including wood crafts and wire art. He was a member of a writer’s group and wrote several short stories. He was an active member at the Waipahu YMCA and frequent visitor of the Waipahu Library.
Herman enjoyed travel, country music and lifelong friendships. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. As “Papadoo,” he especially enjoyed his weekend visits with his grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life for Herman Smith will be held on Tuesday, December 5th at Mililani Memorial Park, Mauka Chapel. Visitation will be at 6:00 pm followed by services at 7:00 pm with refreshments to follow. Inurnment will be on Thursday, December 7 at 10:00 am at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, Kaneohe. No flowers please. Aloha or casual attire.
