Homer Libert Gibbs' Obituary
Homer Gibbs Obituary
Homer L. Gibbs, 90 passed away peacefully at his Wahiawa home on March 6, 2025.
Homer was born on November 29, 1934, at Wahiawa General Hospital to Homer Charles and Augusta Laura Gibbs. Homer was a caring and helpful young man. As a youngster, when he was done with school for the day, Homer could be found helping his mother at her work place on Wheeler Air Base. Homer also helped his father at Our Lady of Sorrows Church where he served as an altar boy.
As a teen, Homer attended St. Louis High School, where he was a Captain in the ROTC program. It is through his participation in ROTC that Homer met his future wife of sixty-four years, Joan K. Gibbs. Homer loved and was devoted to Joan, who passed on December 25, 2020. Together, Homer and Joan were blessed with four children, Russell (Kim), Kathleen (Christopher) Boyle, Kimberly (Hany) Sabet and Diane (Glenn) Peterson, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Homer loved the New York Yankees, MOPAR and his collection of Lionel trains. His love of the Yankees was evident as he could give you any statistic about the team, calling them "Bananas" when they lost a game. He was able to enjoy many a Yankees' game in Oakland and at their home stadium in the Bronx, NY. In addition to his love for the Yankees' baseball, Homer enjoyed coaching high school basketball and volleyball at his Ala Mater, Saint Louis High School. He was a true Crusader!
Homer worked at Hawaiian Electric for 47 years, starting in 1959 in the custodial department at the Waiau power plant, working his way up in the company and retiring as the Supervisor in the Distribution Underground Division. Through his years with HECO, he made many friends and helped individuals with their careers. Whenever his crew encountered an issue, Homer would tell them, "Don't worry, It's a PIECE OF CAKE!" and would get the job done!
Homer was also a proud member of the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He received many awards during his time as a reservist. He was selected to train for the Navy/Marine "Sea, Air and Land" (S.E.A.L.) program. He was one week from graduating when he withdrew due to his father's passing. An article in Currents, a U.S. Marine Corps publication, titled "Homer Gibbs - One Helluva Marine" talked of Homer's "close-cropped hair" as being a sign of his time in the Marine Corps, his being the "first in the history of the Hawaii 4th Force Reconnaissance Company to earn the rank of E-9, "the highest that can be earned by an enlisted man."
Homer loved his MOPARs, Chryslers, Plymouths and Dodges. He fondly recalled his father's 1967 Chrysler New Yorker, saying he had wished he kept it. Throughout his years, Homer bought many MOPAR cars, caring for each as if it were one of his children.
Homer also enjoyed his Lionel train collection and had his brother-in-law build an elevated track in the family room where he would run them. Before his passing, Homer was able to enjoy watching his Christmas train locomotive and a compliment of cars travel around the family room once again.
Services for Homer will be held on Monday, April 14th, 2025 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Nuuanu. Visitation from 9am to 10:30am with Mass to follow. Burial at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific ("Punchbowl") at 1pm. Aloha Attire.
