Ivan K. Toyama's Obituary
Ivan K Toyama passed away peacefully and comfortably on July 24, 2025. He was born on Nov. 19, 1946 to Shintaro and Tsuruko Toyama at Olaa Pule, on the Big Island, and lived in Mt. View. Ivan graduated from Hilo High School in 1964 and completed a two year accounting course from Hilo Technical School. While in high school, Ivan and his brother Francis built a 2 acre hothouse to raise anthuriums for the family business, Hawaiian Flower Gardens. He worked for 39 years at Hawaiian Airlines as an agent, had a real estate company, and was also an entrepreneur.
He enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, and visiting family members on the continent and the Big Island. One of his favorite places for New Year’s Eve was to see the fireworks in Sydney, Australia, first at Darling Harbor at 9 pm, then walking to Sydney Harbor for the midnight show. He would often travel with his wife to Delta Kappa Gamma events in Japan, Minnesota, Washington, and other states.
After Ivan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, he became involved with the Mililani Support Group for Parkinson’s, Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s at Pearlside Gym in Kapolei, the Hilo Rock Steady Boxing group on zoom, the Leeward YMCA exercise program for Parkinson’s, Hawaii Parkinson’s Association and the Davis Phinney Foundation. Daily exercise, a healthy diet, lots of water, research-based lifestyle practices, and great caregivers helped to extend his quality of life for seven years.
He is survived by his wife Fay, children Marlene Calderon (Monte), Spencer, and Bryce (Elizabeth), and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Charlotte Ng and Eleanor Arakaki (Charles), and his brother Francis (Hazel) Toyama. His brothers, Ronald and Glenn predeceased him. Private services were held.
