James Sandy Sele's Obituary
James Sandy Sele passed away on April 11, 2026, at the age of 54 in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
Born in Wahiawā to the late Rogelio Sele and Sandra Toyama. James grew up in Ewa, where he spent his childhood enjoying simple island days playing slingshots, sky Inning, chase master, and riding bikes with his cousins. He was later raised by his mother and stepfather, Benjamin Toyama, who helped shape the strong, respectable, hardworking man he became.
James attended schools in Ewa Beach and learned early on the importance of hard work and family. As a young boy, he helped his Uncle Bobby cook huli huli chicken, and later worked at Arby's while attending
Campbell High School.
A gifted athlete, James had a deep love for sports - especially football.
At Campbell High School, he played both offense and defense and proudly served as captain of the football team. After graduation, he attended College of the Redwoods, where he continued playing football and earned an Associate degree in Liberal Arts.
After returning home to Hawai'i, James dedicated over 20 years of service to HMSA. He later worked at Hawaii Medical Center and Hill-Rom before achieving his dream job at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in 2022, where he worked as a Material Expediter.
In 2007, James married the love of his life, Gail, and together they shared 18 beautiful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support.
James was a beloved husband, son, braddah, godfather, uncle, coach, and friend.
Beyond his career, James found great joy in coaching youth football for the Ewa Beach Sabers and Ewa Beach Crush. He loved mentoring
young athletes and encouraging them to succeed both on and off the field. His impact on the community and the lives of the kids he coached will never be forgotten.
Even while facing serious health challenges, including dialysis, bypass surgery, and other medical complications, James remained strong, resilient, and determined. He continued working and showing up for the people he loved for as long as he could.
James was passionate about his football team, the Chicago Bears. He loved music, cooking/car videos, and was a fan of the Incredible Hulk. He had a beautiful singing voice and a joyful spirit that could light up any room. Known for his heart of gold, playful personality, and contagious laugh, James was someone people could always count on. He was protective of the people he loved and deeply devoted to his family and friends. Anyone who knew James knew what an amazing person he was. He was down-to-earth, genuine, caring, and always willing to help others. He truly was the kind of person you were grateful to have in your life.
Most of all, James loved his wife, family, and friends deeply. He always wanted the very best for those he cared about, especially the younger generation.
James is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Gail Sele, along with many family members and friends who will forever miss his
smile, laughter, voice, and unconditional love.
Rest in love, James Sele. You will forever be a Bear in our hearts. Bear Down.
