John Robello Sylva III's Obituary
John Robello Sylva III Obituary
John Robello Sylva III, lovingly remembered as John by those who knew him best, passed away on May 8, 2024, in Kapolei, Hawaii, at the age of 78. Born on March 26, 1946, in Honolulu, Hawaii, John was a man of integrity and warmth, whose guidance, fortitude, and loving presence enriched the lives of everyone around him.
John's journey through life was marked by his steadfast love for his family. He is survived by his wife, Robina M. Sylva, and their children: Sons Joseph P. Sylva (Azua), Thomas K. Yogi (Lena), William A. Yogi (Shirley). Daughters Cherie Texeira (Widowed), Carlaann Haili, and Monica Maluenda (Mike). Brothers Patrick R. Sylva (Roberta) and Daniel R. Sylva (Rouina). His legacy continues through his 27 cherished grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, who will forever hold memories of their Papa's courage, generosity, and handy nature close to their hearts. While his passing is deeply felt, he now reunites with his beloved son Michael R. Sylva, his father John R. Sylva Jr., his mother Madeline Pascua, his brother Christopher R. Sylva, Sisters Theresa Kozawa and Gwendolyn J. Lopez and grandchildren Sarah-Maranatha, Tommy Jr. and Shawnny Girl, who all preceded him in death.
John's professional life was characterized by a fierce work ethic and a dedication to serving the community. He was a skilled heavy equipment operator for the city and county Parks and Recreation Department, and after many years of dedicated service, he retired from The Board of Water Supply. His contributions to the community's infrastructure remain a testament to his hard work and commitment to all that he served.
Beyond his career, John was a man of the sea, never happier than when he was aboard his boat, The Ruby M II. A commercial and hobby fisherman, John was known not just for the catch he harvested from the waters, but also for his expertise and passion, which he joyously shared with anyone eager to learn. His children and grandchildren will recall days spent at sea with their captain, where the ocean and sky met, and John's tales and teachings were as endless as the horizon.
John had a natural ability to fix and build, a trait that not only made him invaluable at home but also earned him the admiration from all that knew him. His courageous spirit was evident in everything he did, whether he was navigating rough seas or offering a helping hand to a neighbor in need. Yet, it was his warmth and selflessness that truly defined him, as he extended generosity to all, whether family, friend, or stranger.
As we bid farewell to John Robello Sylva III, we are comforted by the mark he has left on our hearts. We will remember his laughter and cherish his stories. Though he has set sail on his final voyage, the course he charted in life will continue to guide us through our own. John will be deeply missed, eternally loved, and always remembered as a man who lived a full life, rich in experiences and abundant in love.
His life will be celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing this remarkable man. John Robello Sylva III has finished his journey here, but the ripples of his life's impact will be felt far beyond the years he spent with us. Rest in peace, John—husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Your spirit, like the waves of the ocean you loved so dearly, will never cease.
