I don't know if this is the same Joe Kamai, I pulled out of a mine field in the Korean, he was a great guy, great sense of humor, and a fine soldier..
Ke aloha nÅ: this uncle was a part of our lives growing up in HawaiÊ»i Kai because my uncle worked with him at Hawaiian Tel at various switching stations on East OÊ»ahu. My uncle adored this man and they were friend and I am sure his kanaka maoli nature reminded my uncle of his own family on Molokai. I remember a hard working, family man who had a quick sense of humor and was quick to laugh. Who would have known that one of his daughters would marry our cousin and we would be family. I see his middle name is Kalahuole which I take as meaning - the unforbidden or unrestricted one-often referred to forbiden or kapu nature of certain food items in old HawaiÊ»i. Some foods were reserved for aliÊ»i of high rank. And some foods (like most banana varieties but not all) were forbidden to women. For Uncle Joe, perhaps this was exemplified by his generous ways of feeding others (literally and figuratively) and his sense of giving. Nothing was off limits or forbidden to give. This is how I remember him.We will miss this patriarch of the Kamai family. Ke aloha mau e Kalahuole e.
