Kathleen Yvonne Akau Obituary
Kathleen Muliwai Yvonne “Kathy” Akau, affectionately known as “Baby”, departed this life peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on April 20, 2024. Born in Honolulu on August 20, 1944, to parents George Stancil (Hattie) and Frances DeMello Peoples (Pop John). Kathy’s early education was at St. Francis and Roosevelt High School. Her career began as a professional hula dancer and she later pursued her passion for mechanics by founding the Family Automotive Service Team (FAST), which she operated successfully for 33 years until her retirement.
Kathy’s lifelong romance began at age 13 when she met Joseph Akau Jr. (Dodi), who would become her husband the day after she graduated from high school. They exchanged vows at Central Union Church on June 9, 1962, and cherished each other for 67 years until Dodi’s passing in 2021. Together, they enjoyed travels and memorable times in Las Vegas, often accompanied by many of their ohana.
Kathy often expressed that her family was her greatest accomplishment, famously stating, “Ohana is the most important thing in life.” She leaves behind a loving family, including her sons Dodi (Brooke) and Josiah, daughters Tita (Tracy) and Joelle (Kealii), along with her cherished grandchildren Poni, Akilah, Alisha (Patrick), Kawailani (Tiffany), Kea Boy (Macey), Piehu (Harley), Alapaki, Alakea (Kaili), Jayce, Alanui, and great-grandchildren Ekahi, Leimomi, Judah, Kanelo, Kaulanakila.
