This was the scene from our home in Kawaguchi on Monday morning, January 14, 2013. Kell had been staying with us for the weekend, but would be flying back to Hawaii later that day.A rare snowfall had been forecast for Tokyo, and all weekend Kell kept asking me if I thought he’d get to see the snow before he left.That morning, we had our answer. I got be at his side as Kell experienced his first snowfall.Ever since that special day, whenever it has snowed here, I’ve sent Kell a LINE message with a short, coded message:“It’s a Kell day.â€He loved that.Snow days in Tokyo will still be known as "Kell days," my friend. I might not be able to let you know by text. But when it snows here, I will still know that you know, too.
