Kim Jurison Tanaka, 76, of Waipahu, known affectionately to friends and family as Kim, passed away peacefully in her home on August 19, 2024. Born on March 1, 1948, in Kyeonggi-do, South Korea, Kim's journey led her to touch the lives of many with her warmth and entrepreneurial spirit.
Kim's early years were marked by a blend of cultural heritage and a zest for life that would become her hallmark. Her move to Hawaii became a pivotal moment, not only for her own story but also for the culinary landscape of Waipahu. Kim's passion for food and service culminated in the establishment of Jurison's Inn in 1993; Restaurant Kunio in 1997; Jurison's West Side Cafe in 2002, which all became a beloved staples in the community. Her dedication to authenticity and hospitality ensured that every guest felt like family, and her restaurant flourished as a testament to her hard work and vision.
Beyond her business achievements, Kim was an active member of her community, engaging in various associations that aimed to enrich the lives of those around her. Her involvement in these organizations was not merely a duty but a joy, as she believed in giving back to the community that had embraced her and her family so wholeheartedly.
Kim is survived by sons Alfred Carl (Toni) Jurison and Ryan Tanaka; daughters Patty (Ricky) Hamada, Shauna (Robert) Chavez, Kira (Randy) Tanaka-Yee, Maile (Walter) Sterling; brother Young Gil (Jennie) Kim; and grandchildren Cayla Jurison, Cara Jurison, Carl Jurison II, Nicholas Hamada, Jessica (Danny) Hamada-Reskey, Kiana Tanaka-Yee, Kora Tanaka-Yee, Kole Tanaka-Yee, Kaia Sterling, and Alec Sterling.
Kim was preceded in death by her husband George Tanaka, parents Heung Nam and Woo Sim Kim.
Kim's legacy is one of perseverance, generosity, and the enduring power of community. Her radiant smile and infectious laughter will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As we bid farewell to Kim Jurison Tanaka, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who carry on her legacy.
