Hello Everyone:Wish I could’ve been there for my mother’s final farewell from the beautiful Island in which she was born and raised on. I remember many happy moments and sad ones too, but as many families that were raised around “OTA†camp we were not the exception. But as many of you know, Mom was an exceptionally strong woman, both physically and mentally. She would assign each of us children chores, and she would see to it that those chores would be done to her satisfaction.  And she was also a great negotiator; one classic example of that which I will never forget was….crabbing and picking clams in the water of Pearl Harbor. Keep in mind that this is Federal Property. In fact, there were big painted signs which said…fishing, crabbing and the harvesting of clams was prohibited.Well needless to say, we were caught along with several others by the Pearl Harbor game warden. Before the warden could give us a ticket, mom would challenge the warden with her brilliant debate of words. Her argument of words to the warden were…….â€Why are you trying to stop us when in fact we are just trying to feed our children! We are not harming the property, nor are we harming the food chain, we are only taking what we need to feed our kids and no more. We are not taking these clams, crabs or fish to sell, we do not sell them.â€Her last endearing words to the warden were, “I refuse to go on welfare and have the government support myself and my children. Now mister warden, you have a choice…to write us all a citation or we all go on welfare.â€Needless to say, the game warden let us all go, with the parting words of “don’t let anybody see those bags and don’t spread the word that I did not give you a citation.†All to mom’s smart negotiation skills. There are many more memories I can recall, but as you all already know, she was truly a caring person and a stern one as she had to be.Wish we did not have this pandemic situation we are in. Maybe some day, when this is all over, we can all get together once again to reminisce about our upbringing by our parents, grandparents and great grandparents. To Mom… Aloha ‘oe’ and I love you.
