Luisa Roque Bayang's Obituary
Luisa Bayang Obituary
Luisa Roque Bayang, 90, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii passed away peacefully at home on April 20, 2023. She was born on August 19, 1932 to the late Bernabe Labayug Roque and the late Emeteria Agustin Sabog. She was born and raised in Barangay Nalbo, Laoag City, Philippines and was the 4th child of six children. She had one older sister, Eugenia Roque Ibera (deceased) and four brothers, (all deceased) Elpidio Sabog Roque, Catalino Sabog Roque, Antonio Sabog Roque and Gaudencio Sabog Roque.
She immigrated to Hawaii on August 15, 1969 with her five children to join her husband Pablo Pascual Bayang (now deceased), who came to Hawaii two years earlier. Three years later after arrival, they were blessed to have their youngest and only Hawaii born child.
Luisa was a seamstress and ran a small family-owned convenience store in the Philippines as well helped with the bookkeeping for her husband’s carpentry shop and rice mill in the Philippines. In Hawaii, her first job was a seamstress, which she took a pride in because she sewed the jerseys for the University of Hawaii’s basketball team, the UH Warriors. She didn’t stay long at this job though because she found a better paying job at the Halekulani Hotel, as a hotel maid. Not too long after getting her hotel job, she was promoted to be an inspectress which gave her the responsibility of training new employees for the housekeeping department and checking and making sure the rooms were up to par for their guests. The hotel management also sent her to school at the Kapiolani Community College and got a certificate in Hospitality Management. Luisa worked for the hotel until the early 1980’s when the hotel owners decided to build a high rise hotel instead of the bungalows that they used to have.
Following her hotel job at Halekulani Hotel, Luisa got a job as a housekeeper for Straub Medical Center. And while working there, she got a recommendation from her old boss at Halekulani Hotel, for a housekeeping job at Washington Place, where the governors of Hawaii and their family lived while in office. She worked there during the terms of Governor George Ariyoshi, Governor John D. Waihee III and part of Governor Benjamin Cayetano’s term. She was a hard worker who took pride in all her jobs including her private part-time jobs. Luisa retired from the State of Hawaii at the age of 65.
After retirement, Luisa enjoyed spending time with her husband, Pablo Pascual Bayang. They were married for 69 years when he passed away on November 26, 2021. During their retirement years, they enjoyed gardening together, fixing and maintaining their home, cooking and hosting family parties, spending time with their grandchildren and great-grand-children and attending most, if not all of their activities. They also enjoyed traveling to the mainland, especially to California and Las Vegas.
Luisa is survived by her six children: Pepito “Pepe” (Sally) Bayang, Matilde “Maty” (John) Beasley, Corazon “Cora” (Eddie) Lastimosa, Emmanuel “Manny” (Angie) Bayang, Delia “Dee” (Greg) Fuller and Harold (Marie Rodriquez) Bayang. Also survived by: 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren, 1 step-great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Mililani Memorial Park and Mortuary, Mauka Chapel. Visitation begins at 5:30 pm and service at 6:30 pm. Inurnment will be on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Mililani Memorial Park.
