Today is Christmas, but it's not the same without Malia. I was a neighbor of the McGoldricks in the 1980s. I'm crushed to learn Malia died prematurely, which happens all too often to kind and conscientious people. She was a hyperliterate lover of libraries like me and I loved her quirky style. I remember her mom Mary kindly driving us to school and coaching me for the spelling bee, which I won! It was a rough period for me as a few locals bullied me for being a small young military-brat newcomer, but the McGoldricks left a positive impression on me with their genuine kindness. I just wish I had the opportunity to thank them. I remember Malia's siblings Hal and Brenna and I hope they’re doing OK. - George Nichols
