Mamerta Uganiza Obituary
Mamerta was born in Banna, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on October 17, 1934 to the late Segundo and the late Paulina Uganiza.
In her early years, Mamerta exceled as a student: she was promoted one grade and was Valedictorian of her class. In her early twenties, Mamerta was hired as a nanny for the Reed family. When the Reed family left the Philippines to return to their home in Maryland, they brought Mamerta with them. Mamerta took care of the Reed’s three young daughters, and even as adults, the daughters would keep in touch with Mamerta and visit her.
In 1966, Mamerta’s older sister, Angela, petitioned her to live in Hawaii as a permanent resident. In 1970, she arrived in Hawaii and was hired as a sales clerk at Dee Lite Bakery (aka Saint Germain Bakery). Mamerta worked at Dee Lite Bakery for many years, and eventually became the operations supervisor until her retirement in 1997 after 27 years.
Mamerta Uganiza passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024 at Liliha Health Care Center, she was 89 years old. Mamerta is survived by brother Romy (Rochelle) Uganiza and sister Leticia (Nelson) Tumolva. She was preceded in death by her sisters Angela Uganiza and Juliana (Damaso) Sagun, brothers Pedrito (Carmencita) Uganiza and Algerico (Carmen) Uganiza.
Visitation will be held on April 1, 2024 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Mililani Mortuary – Downtown location (20 South Kukui Street, Honolulu, HI 96813). Services will begin at 10:00 a.m. with lunch to follow. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. at Valley of the Temples (47-200 Kahekili Highway, Kaneohe, HI 96744).
