Marcelina Sarahina Samante- Medeiros Obituary
Marcelina "Mary" Sarahina Samante-Medeiros, 92, of Ewa, quietly passed away on March 1, 2024 in Mililani. Mary was born on January 2, 1932 and grew up in the plantation town of Ewa on the island of Oahu.
Her mother (Petra Hilea) passed away after bearing Doris from childbirth. Hence, she was raised from a very young age by her father, Gorgonio Sarahina, who remained a widower until he passed away after retiring from plantation life to return home in Cebu, Philippines. She was the second youngest of six siblings - Conrada, Milton, the twins Rose and Alice, and Doris. They have all since passed away.
Mary led a full life. She married Bernard Abiar Samante and raised seven children - Geraldine, Sharon, Michael, Dennis, Lawrence, Doreen, and Harmony (adopted). They proudly gave her 13 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Sadly, Bernard passed away shortly after he retired from government at age 60. Later in life and after her retirement from the Federal government, she met and married Leonard Medeiros from the island of Kauai. In the 20+ years, everyone in Kauai called her Marcie as she was well known for making delicious Portuguese bread, growing beautiful orchids and anthuriums, quilting, singing, playing the ukulele, and hula with her kupunas. After Leonard passed, she moved to Palm Desert, CA to be near her daughter, Geraldine. Within three years, she became homesick and returned home to Hawaii to spend her remaining days to be near family.
A private memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at the Ewa Immaculate Conception Church (visitation at 8:30 AM, Mass to follow at 9:30 AM). Burial services at 2:00 PM at Mililani Memorial Park Cemetery.
