I’m not sure how Monika and I became friends…we both walked home from Leilehua together nearly every day! She was such a sweet friend! So gentle and kind. Two haole girls —but really two local girls. I live in Utah now and she lived in Hawai’i but I often thought of her! I never saw Monika anxious or angry…just very quiet and soft spoken! She and I were both just really good friends! Every 12 year old needs a friend with whom she can share her deepest secrets; for me, this was my cousin, Monica. We met in 1965 when I first visited Hawaii and spent a week on Kauai together. After I returned to Ohio, we wrote letters every week. These letters sustained me though my adolescence, until I moved to Hawaii in 1979.
