Aloha “Haleiwa Girlâ€,On behalf of our Ohana, we send you a Big Mahalo Nui Loa for your heartfelt tribute to our mom, your Aunty Naomi. Your tribute was “well said†describing our beloved Mom precisely who she was to us and to the North Shore Community. Yes, mom was the popular “Aunty Naomi†to the entire community, blood related or not, so if you knew Aunty Naomi, you are Hanai into our Ohana. Thank you for mentioning the Chosen Few Wahines which I believe was a start of mom’s softball career with the Pink Panthers, Kosmoz, and Eleu Miki Miki, just to name a few but of course the Pink Panthers was the talk of the town..LOL As for the Chosen Few, I’m surprised that you remembered the first string players names, thank you! This team, our Aunties, were tough Wahines who have paved the way for all Wahine softball leagues. Yes, most have passed on and when mom passed on January 8th, I know the Heaven’s softball league was taking place and there was a Big Shout, "Batter Up" when mom arrived that day. Hallelujah! Yes, our mom, your Aunty Naomi has been instrumental in the success of the Haleiwa Sea Spree E.K. Fernandez Carnival for many years as well as many other community events. Mom was very loving and caring and is well loved and respected by everyone who knew her as well. Besides all the community events that mom was dedicated to, she still had time for us. We are very grateful that God has blessed us with an amazing mother who we miss dearly, and we will honor her at her Celebration of Life. So, Ms. Haleiwa “Bat†Girl, I must confess and apologize that I cannot remember the famous “Bat Girl†who worked so hard chasing after the Chosen Few bats, so I pray that you will come to Aunty Naomi’s Celebration so we can give you lots of hugs and kisses. Again, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to honor our mom with a beautiful tribute. I know her big smile will forever be in your heart as well as ours. "Aunty Naomi" as I have always called her, will never be forgotten....she’s in heaven playing softball and making kalbi…Aunty Naomi was part of an amazing group of softball players when I was growing up. I was the Bat Girl for these amazing women and I admired all of them! They were called the "Chosen Few" because they were hard core awesome softball players from the North Shore, who were truly CHOSEN. Some of these women from first base and around the diamond are: First base and Pitcher: Aunty Dot Awai; Second Base: Aunty Ruby Canon Cubi; Shortstop: Aunty Julie Suan Blas; Third Base: Aunty Annie Hookala Silva; Catcher: Aunty Violet Harvest Gilman; Left Field: Aunty Julie Almeida; Short Center & Pitcher: Bonbon Awai Lacar; right field: Aunty Naomi! Some of the other players were Aunty Doting Agaran, Aunty [ ? I forget her name… sorry! ] Aiwohi, Aunty Cece Lorenzo Baldogo, Aunty Rachel Machado....their coaches were Leslie Almeida, Neri Blas, Leslie Lunasco and a few others. **If I missed anyone, I apologize, but I was a little kid when we used to go to Haleiwa Beach Park and Wahiawa Park. Most of these women have passed on and they are probably playing softball in heaven, making big noise and laughing! When they saw Aunty Naomi arrive it got louder in Heaven! But seriously, they were fierce, hard core softball players and so many people around the island knew them! Aunty Naomi was well known and part of an amazing culture on the North Shore! She played softball then all the women she played with and against, had daughters who also played softball. Aunty Naomi became the team Mom for so many softball teams including the Pink Panthers which her daughter Tammy was part of! This group of girls were the best dressed in the league and Aunty Naomi made sure they had the cutest pink polka dot sox and matching jackets! She also made sure that every single player, their brothers and sisters and their families were fed. I remember I was first introduced to Kalbi when Aunty Naomi made it. We were at the infamous Haleiwa Sea Spree and Aunty Naomi made Kalbi and marinated it overnight in a big white plastic square bucket. To this day, when I have Kalbi, I close my eyes hoping it’ll be good as Aunty Naomi’s, and not once has it ever been! When Aunty Naomi worked for the Haleiwa and Wheeler Schools, she was trusted and loved by so many of the younger parents who were the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her former softball teammates. No matter where or when we would see Aunty Naomi, she would always greet us with the biggest smile that exuded love and made me feel at home. Her low, comforting voice is something that I will always remember… I can also see her standing at the top of the stairs of her house on Waialua Beach Road waving at us as we drove by…Although I grew up knowing I was not blood related to her kids, Boy, Tammy, Manny, Kimi (Noe), to this day when I see her kids, I have this longing to hug them and to say “hi cousin!†I feel like they are part of my youth because their Mom was truly MY Aunty and they are part of my ohana and part of my hana-bata days! Aunty Naomi gave so much of herself to the North Shore Ohana and will always be loved and remembered!
