This tribute is 4 years late. In the midst of a fight for survival with leukemia, I am reflecting on my mentors. I was a youth in the Wahiawa I and III wards from 1971 to 1975. "Ma Perez," as Patti preferred we call her, was fun and feisty. She also had lots of pretty daughters so we were at the Perez house a lot. But it really was to laugh and listen to Patti's advice as much to see her daughters. For 43 years after my family was transferred by the Army to New Jersey in 1975, she sent me a box of macadamia nuts and a Hawaii calendar at Christmas. She was at my wedding and adopted Laurie as another youth from the 70s to love. We met with her when she was on her mission in Salt Lake and introduced her to my kids when we vacationed in Hawaii. All this, despite getting arrested by the Schofield Barracks military police for kidnapping Cheryl. I love and miss you Patti.
