Mrs. Alonzo had always been, “my friend’s mother,†but more recently, she had been “my friend.†I would visit her occasionally, to drop off food or run an errand if she needed help. She was always so kind and sweet to me. Once she really wanted to help get sour sop leaves for me. So we went on an adventure and drove all the way to Waianae to get some from her friend’s farm. That day rain was pouring down in buckets! I was driving my old clunker of a van, and my windshield wipers seemed to be just smearing the water across the front windshield. I could barely see the road! Mrs. Alonzo was calm the entire time and seemed to be happy just spending time with me. She always spoke to me like I was a “friend†and not her “daughter’s friend.†She always made me feel valued and appreciated. I will miss her very much…
