This weekend, my extended family honors my step-mother, Phyllis.I don't remember the exact day that we met. I was the oldest of my father's kids and much shier than the others. I preferred to sit at a "regular" table at my father and hers wedding reception instead of at the "big" table with the rest of the siblings.I guess I was also worried about how everyone would interact. But Phyllis, who's oldest was a year older than me, seemed to sense that this was just the beginning.Over the years, she sent me countless little notes and cards. She invited me to stay at her house. She was welcoming even when I had arguments with my father.In summation, she did the very best she could and I know that now her burdens are over, she is resting in heaven.Aloha, Mom!
