Bert was a very loving man. Caring for all his family wether related through blood or just bounded by connection. Taking in many of those who were in need of guidance. Bert was a man who lived off the land and stood on living life to the fullest with no regrets. His love for fishing, hunting and most of all his music were unmatched. He never believed in financial richness and having a lot possessions. To him “rich” in life meant being surrounded by his loved ones, doing what made him the most happy, and living with no regrets. Never being greedy and always giving what he could, sometimes even more than what he had. That was his riches. Bert had many passions in life…Hunting, fishing, music and many more. Hunting was something that not only excited his soul but brought him peace. He learnt many life lessons - patience, peace, humbleness and appreciation. He walked those mountains and not just mountains but “summits” with determination. Walking land that had been barely been seen by mankind. From hearing the the silence and echoing of birds chirping to the sound of trees rustling through the wind with no civilization in site. He was a strong man who connected with the aina in a way that only few will ever get to experience in this lifetime. He was such a driven being who always pushed himself to do what he loved with little to no limitations, never flaunting his trophies.
Later in life, fishing was added to his list of tmany talents. Becoming a way of life for him. Being able to provide for his ohana from the mountains to the ocean truly made him the definition of mauka to makai man, but never being greedy with his take aways, believing you only take from the aina what is needed. “Fishing” brought his family together, from ling on random days and having others join to planned caping trips with family and friends, that was his joybeing surrounded by his closest loved ones, telling past stories, eating till you couldn’t breathe, roasting marshmallows with the keiki, having a good time and waking up to the most beautiful sceneries. Creating so many memories that’ll never be forgotten. Bert had such a strong love for his family, something so genuine and surreal you could just feel the love. Now out of his many passions one of his greatest loves and prized possessions was his music. The love and connection he had for his guitar was unexplainable. It was something that only a few would actually understand the type of feeling that came to him when playing and creating music. The way he played you could just hear the admiration and respect he had for his music. The way he picked and strummed every cord, it was almost angelic like. So natural and so effortless, its as if he was born to pick up that wooden - string riddled instrument and play. His wife, and mother of their children, Winona Sabanal was not only his epic love but his bestfriend. The type of love you think that could only possibly happen in movies as if it isn’t real. Caring and loving each other through every thing life threw their way, they fought every storm that rained on them. They were each others rainbow. Being together over 60 years they had became one, loving each other maybe more than they even loved their own selves. When you think of marriage you picture them at least I do. After surviving every trouble and believing in eachother with the strength of their love that they were not only unbreakable but inseparable. From the minute each met they knew “this was my forever.” till the day they no longer walked this earth it was them till the end. Bert and Winona had built such a beautiful loving family that carries his legacy forever on. Although he may not be here in his physical vessel, his souls walks with us everyday and remember him by all the good times each one of us had with him. There isn’t a day that we don’t miss everything about him but we know he watches over us every day and we push through with the promise that one day we will meet again.
We love you papa, dad and husband, until next time.
