Shirley Kiyoko Igarashi
April 3, 1949 - April 3, 2023
Shirley was born on April 3, 1949 to Charles and Kimiyo Igarashi at Waialua Hospital, Waialua, Hawaii.
Growing up, Shirley enjoyed playing piano, riding her bicycle and going crabbing and fishing. She spent summers with aunties, uncles and cousins in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. She had fond memories of her time in Hilo and of the anthurium gardens. As a teenager, Shirley spent her summers working in the pineapple fields in Wahiawa and on the Island of Lanai.
Shirley grew up ar the Waialua Sugar Mill Camp not too far from the Hongwanji Mission Church. Later, the family moved to Kukea Circle in Waialua. Shirley attended Waialua Elementary and Intermediate School and, in 1967, she graduated from Waialua High School. She went to the Church College of Hawaii, (now called Brigham Young University) where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree.
Shirley worked at Del Webb's Kuilima Resort Hotel and Country Club (now called the Turtle Bay Resort), Hyatt Regency Waikiki, Aloha Unlimited, and Aston Hotels and Resorts. She also worked part time at Aloha Holidays and at trade shows and craft fairs for Som' Good Seasonings. Shirley's passion was working and volunteering for the Sons and Daughters of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Nisei Veterans Legacy. She enjoyed her conversations and helping the veterans. She made many friends with the Sons and Daughters. When it came to helping, Shirley was always there to lend a hand.
Shirley was a traveler. She traveled the world with friends and her cousin Sharon. High on Shirley's bucket list was going to Niigata. She wanted to see where her ancestors were from. So, in mid-March she and Sharon ventured to Japan and Niigata and that was Shirley's last adventure.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Waialua Hongwanji Mission (67-313 Kealohanui St., Waialua, HI). Visitation begins at 9:00 am, and service at 10:00 am.
