Dad was many things throughout his lifetime: a plantation boy, an enthusiastic youth, a dedicated military man and a loving family man, just to start. To me, he was someone we looked to for advice, encouragement and security. He was great company. He was funny, loved to sing, enjoyed tinkering and fixing things, watched all kinds of action movies and loved eating out. He was strong — physically, emotionally and spiritually. So much of who I am today is thanks to his resolve in supporting and keeping our family together.I’ll miss his laugh, his stories, his philosophies and his candor. I’ll miss his smile and joking nature, his toughness and his kindness. And all of him, I’ll remember with great fondness and love. I’m deeply saddened that he is no longer with us, yet grateful that he lived a long and full life — and that I was so lucky to have him as my dad.
Dad and his family grew up in the country, on the Helemanu plantation. He said “It was the best way for an individual to grow up in.” As a child he swam in the canal ditch, picked sugar cane & pineapples, took care of chickens, pigs, pigeons and pet dogs. His favorite pastime was fireworks and going to the movie theater. He always had a silly joke to tell and a positive outlook on life. After high school he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served 5 years (SGT), then enlisted to the newly organized U.S. Air Force. Military life took him and our family to locations far and wide: Hawaii, Georgia, Japan, Philippines, Arizona, Thailand, and Vietnam. Along the way, his family grew to eight beautiful children. We all had different experiences with Dad and Mom and each of us, many stories to tell. Dad served a total of ~29 years and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. Later, he worked in sales, real estate and finance.I will miss our ukulele and singing sessions, “talk story” about the good old days, and his spirited self and smile! Love you 🥰 Miss you!
How fleeting is life? A cliché but one with so much truth in it. We do not know our Time allocation. We think or pretend to think we have so much more time - then poof the time is gone, used up.Somehow, I thought you would be here for many more years. It’s hard to accept you’ve reached your time allocation. Though you had 98 wonderful years which you shared with us, even that amount seemed too little. It is a comfort, though, to believe in eternal life and that you are up there basking in The Light of our Lord.You were our rock in our growing up years. Our provider. But also the proverbial comedian, quick with the Dad jokes. You and Mom were also our life teachers giving us valuable life lessons that made us into the people we now today. We thank you for that. By your actions and sacrifices, you taught us that we are loved, so we may know how to love. You taught us to be hard-working, to be kind, to be generous, but not to take life too seriously. You taught me the value of family & duty. That family takes care of family. You exposed me to things I might not ever have been interested in like when you cajoled 18-year-old me to take the state insurance license exam. I reluctantly did but surprised myself by finishing the exam before everyone in the room and with an almost perfect score. You knew I would. Though I never went into the insurance field, that was yet another valuable lesson you taught me - that I could achieve more than I thought I could. That has proven valuable in so many other areas of my life. Life is fleeting, but the lessons taught and memories created continues to live on in the lives of those who had the good fortune to know you, those whose lives you touched. Though sadness envelopes us during this time, I smile as I visualize you, Mom, Zac, and Genevieve reunited within the blessings of God. We will see you again.
Dad was a heartwarming and caring person. He was handsome, funny, mischievous at times, smart, and focused. As a devout Catholic he and Mom raised us in righteous ways and set an example helping the church and the community throughout their lives. He told me not to worry about things, to do the best I can and to always remember, " With God all things are possible." His optimism and joy were contagious. Sharing time, going to church eating a meal watching TV, or talking stories, with him were happy moments. He was a wonderful singer, charming his way to earn the role of "Karaoke King" in his latter years. God bless his soul. We love him and will truly miss him.
