Dr. Thomas Nestor, Jr. Obituary
Thomas A. Nestor Jr, 82 y/o, of Mililani Town, Hawaii, died while visiting his wife's family in the Philippines. He was born on September 19, 1942, in Alexandria, Virginia where his father was stationed in the first months of WW2. He moved with his mother and brother Michael to his father's home town of Providence while his father was active in the eastern theatre with with 511th Parachute Infantry Division. After the end of the war, the family moved to Wakefield and Tom attended school in South Kingstown but finished high school in Latrobe PA, where he also attended college, graduating from Saint Vincent's.
Following that, Tom got an MS in Biology from the University of Rhode Island, and then was in the Peace Corps for 3 years in Thailand, doing malaria control work. He continued that work with USAID in the Philippines beginning in 1967. Tom began medical school at Santo Tomas in Manilla, finishing in Queens, New York in the 5th Pathway program. He and his wife, Genevieve A. Achurra, moved to Hawaii in June of 1976. He did a residency in Internal medicine at the University of Hawaii, following which he began work as an Internist at Kaiser Permanente, where he spent his entire career.
Tom was a doctor who cared deeply about his patients, his nursing and physician colleagues, and was very active in his parish church, practiced Zen meditation and was an avid runner. He is survived by his devoted wife, who took extraordinary, loving and devoted care of him during a long period of declining health. He is also survived by two really wonderful children, Glenn and Michelle, along with Glenn's wife Kim and grandson Dylan along with step-grandchildren, and Michelle and her son Nicholas. In addition he is survived by two step-children, Matt and Maricar Layson, both of Las Vegas. Tom has six remaining siblings, Michael Nestor (California), Mary Ellen Davis (Maryland), John Nestor (Arizona), and 3 who live in South Kingstown: Timothy Nestor, Martha Badigian and Elizabeth Nestor. He was pre-deceased by his parents Tom and Mary, his brother Joseph and by a grandson Chayse.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation begins at 5:30 pm and service at 6:30 pm.
