Velma was born on November 17, 1939 in Bon Wier Texas to Goree Davis Sr and Ora Lee Davis. She was the fifth of seventeen children. Velma’s parents Goree Davis Sr and Ora Lee Davis, and four brothers Raymond Davis, Sidney Davis, Napoleon Davis Sr, Elma Davis and four sisters Catherine Diane Davis, Thelma, Dora Lee Davis, Vickie Westbrooks preceded her in death. Velma is a remarkable woman whose love and light touched the hearts of all who knew her. Affectionately known as Bitty and Bea, Velma was a pillar of strength and love within her family. As one of Goree and Ora Davis' 17 children, she embraced the role of a nurturing older sister, shouldering the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings with unwavering dedication.
Velma's journey led her to a career in nursing, where she spent over three decades serving our nation's veterans with compassion and skill at the Veterans Administration. Her commitment to caring for others extended beyond her professional life, as she continued to be a source of support and guidance to her own children, grandchildren, and other family members. She had a special fondness for her two oldest grandkids Boo Boo and Speshelle who she raised.
Upon retiring in 1995, Velma embraced a new chapter of life with vigor and enthusiasm. She pursued lifelong learning, immersing herself in Spanish and computer courses to keep her mind sharp and vibrant. Her dedication to staying active was evident in her daily walks, spanning miles upon miles, a testament to her boundless energy and zest for life.
Velma's legacy is not only one of service and dedication but also of love and joy. Those left to cherish the memory of Velma are her husband Napoleon Bryant Sr. , sisters Creola Simmons (Augusta, Georgia), Viola Smith (Houston, Texas), Betty Davis Coburn Harbour (Houston, Texas), Debra Davis Griffin (Earl) of Bon Wier, Texas, brothers Goree Davis Jr ( (Debbie) of Bon Wier, Texas, Clyde Ray Davis (Ella V) of Bon Wier, Texas, Jerry Davis Sr (Shirley) of Bon Wier, Texas, and brother in law Prentiss Westbrook (Bon Wier, Texas), her three children Bridgit Earvin of Los Angeles, California, Timothy Reddish (Lougina) of Palmdale California, and Arlanda Fields (Dave) of Mililani, Hawaii. Thirteen grandchildren; Terry Earl Coleman Jr, Speshelle Garcia, Alandria Floyd, Velma Lynette Gibson, Erica Reddish, Willie Earvin Jr, Bianca Evans, Dave Fields Jr, Jamaal Fields, Trevon Fields, Thailee Johnson, Timothy Reddish Jr, & Charmaine Reddish and nineteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephrews, cousins, and friends. We all were touched by her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.
As we bid farewell to Velma, let us carry forward the lessons she imparted and the love she shared, cherishing her memory with every step we take and every life we touch. Though she may no longer walk beside us, her spirit will forever guide and inspire us. Rest in peace, dear Velma, knowing that your love will continue to illuminate our lives for generations to come.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Old Field Church of God & Christ in Bon Wier, Texas. Visitation begins at 9:00 am and service at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Davis Cemetery.
