Yoko Fuji Jones' Obituary
Yoko Jones Obituary
YOKO FUJI JONES, 87, of Pearl City, Hawaii passed away on August 21, 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was born on August 8, 1932 in Osaka, Japan. Yoko lost her mother at a young age during the waning days of World War II, however she didn’t allow that tragedy to define her. A decade after the war ended, she met her future husband, a Marine named Bruce Jones. After they married, she immigrated to the US and was proud to become a citizen several years later.
Yoko was a strong and proud Marine Corps wife, nearly single-handedly raising their two young children, Richard and Jennifer, in her newly-adopted country while Bruce was away serving 6 tours in Vietnam. She lived throughout the US during Bruce’s military career – Arizona, California, North Carolina, Virginia, and of course, Hawaii – where they had lived during the early days of their marriage and where they eventually retired.
Yoko worked at Duty Free Shoppers for 20 years, eventually becoming a supervisor at the Honolulu Airport. She was a dedicated employee, often working 6 days a week, sometimes returning back to work a second shift on the same day.
Yoko was known for her generosity. Whether it was inviting young Marines over for a home-cooked meal, bringing home Japanese tourists who had missed their flights, helping her neighbors, or joining the Neighborhood Watch, she was often the first to help someone in need. She was recognized in 2007 as a Mayor’s Outstanding Senior Honoree.
Most important to Yoko was her family. When her two grandsons (Jeremy and Patrick) were young, she frequently traveled to Chicago to help. She was happy when Jennifer and her husband, Paul, moved back to Hawaii to live with her three years ago. She left a legacy of caring that her family and friends will remember.
Yoko was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce, and her three sisters in Japan. She is survived by her son Richard (Janel) Jones, daughter Jennifer (Paul) Jungel, and grandchildren, Jeremy and Patrick Wilk. Inurnment at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 16 at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
