Yoshiye "Grace" Flores' Obituary
Yoshiye “Grace” Flores, age 98, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026.
Born April 6,1928 in Port Haney, B.C., she lived a full life marked by quiet strength and deep devotion to those she loved. Like other Japanese-Canadian children, she attended 2 schools - a full day at one school for an English education, followed by a few more hours at a Japanese immersion school. Unfortunately, she and her family were uprooted from their farm to an internment camp during WWII and then exiled to Japan in 1946 by government order. While in Japan, Grace worked as an English interpreter at the iconic Imperial Hotel, supporting Allied Occupation efforts. Her family returned to Vancouver, B.C. sometime after 1949, when Japanese-Canadians were allowed to return to their home country.
While much of her later years were shaped by illness, what remained constant throughout her life was an unwavering love for her family. They were always at the center of her world, and she loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Grace was quiet, patient and humble, never wanting to draw attention to herself. She was an amazing seamstress, customizing patterns to her liking. Everything she created, including her daughter’s wedding dress, was made with detail and care. She enjoyed gardening, finding peace tending to her tranquil backyard sanctuary and she loved the Seattle Mariners. “My Oh My!” She would have loved watching the M’s last year!
For the past 15 years, she faced the challenges of late-stage dementia with resilience. Though the illness gradually took memories, the love she held for her family was never forgotten, even when names and faces were no longer recognizable.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman, and it brings comfort to know they are reunited once again. Their bond was enduring, and we are certain that their reunion is a peaceful and happy one.
She is survived by her children and their families as well as extended family in Hawaii, Washington State, and Vancouver B.C., who will carry her memory forward with love.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Hopecare Homes in Bellevue, WA for their support, dedication, loving care and companionship to Grace during her final years and to EvergreenHealth Hospice Care for the compassionate care and guidance during her final days.
A private family service will be held, followed by burial at Mililani Memorial Park in Hawaii. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this time.
She will be deeply missed and gently remembered.
